New Laser Treatment Offers Hope for Patients with Vitiligo
The Advanced Dermatology Center of Columbus, GA is proud to offer a breakthrough in treatment for vitiligo. Vitiligo is a disease which causes white spots or patches in the skin. It is caused when pigment cells (known as "melanocytes") get destroyed. These cells, which are normally found throughout the skin and other parts of the body, are what produces melanin, the pigment which gives the skin its normal color. With vitiligo, these cells are destroyed, resulting in loss of skin color in affected areas. Some of the more common areas of the body where the loss of color due to vitiligo is commonly seen include:
Exposed areas, such as the hands, face, and the upper part of the chest
Areas around body openings, such as the eyes, nostrils, mouth, nipples, umbilicus, and the genitalia
Body "fold" areas, such as the armpits and groin
Injury sites, such as cuts, scrapes, and burns
Hair (scalp, facial, and in other areas) can turn gray early
Around pigmented moles
The choroid of the eye
Vitiligo is believed to affect at least 1% of the population. Many people with vitiligo see at least some loss of skin color in one or more areas by the age of 20.
If you suffer from vitiligo, we understand the impact it can have on your self image and your quality of your life.
The Advanced Dermatology Center is proud to make available a breakthrough treatment which is producing potentially life changing results for many vitiligo sufferers.

It does require multiple treatment sessions, but if you're tired of simply "living with" vitiligo, there is hope. The XTRAC Excimer Laser is F.D.A. approved to treat vitiligo. The XTRAC Laser utilizes UVB light to stimulate melanocytes that may be present deep in the skin.
